Context of School
Coleman Primary is a three form entry primary school in Leicester City with 572 pupils on roll. We have 98% pupils from an ethnic background-mostly Asian but over 20 nationalities in school; 63% with English not their home language; 30% turbulence; 25% free school meals; national levels of SEND and 72% of our pupils are from a Muslim background. We have significant pockets of deprivation and significant numbers of families who are ‘working poor’ and not entitled to benefits. We have an increasing number of refugees (notably Muslim families fleeing persecution)
Why is inclusion and well-being important to you - and your setting?
Inclusion is important to me because of my moral purpose in ensuring the whole school community (parents, staff ,pupils, community) have their voices heard, are welcome, respected and valued and that they are supported to be successful and happy in life. I want everyone to be equipped to articulate their needs, know that these will be respected and valued and to upskill staff and pupils to be respectful of others and use inclusive language. I want our curriculum to be aspirational and representative of our school but also to open eyes to the knowledge and experiences of others. I want our school policies and procedures to be inclusive and for everyone to know their rights and responsibilities.
Why did you choose the GEC as your solution?
I have chosen the GEC as a solution as having worked with the organisation before, I know how amazing the resources and staff are and that it will fully support our school in developing inclusive practice. I like the fact it can be tailored to meet our need as well as offering enormous scope for personal and professional development.
How has this benefitted you?
My previous experiences of working with the GEC have given me the knowledge and experience needed to begin to make an organisation inclusive and to understand both the law and rationale behind inclusive decision making. The training platform is invaluable in upskilling staff with the necessary language and models and the auditing tool gives clear areas of development with all the necessary resources to make improvements. Using the GEC platform is time efficient as well as giving excellent training which is resource evidenced, comprehensive and easy to access. Support is readily available.
